The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) ensures that HGV drivers have a clear view of vulnerable road users. With the grace period extending from October 2024 to May 2025, operators have extra time to meet these safety standards.
What is the DVS Grace Period?
The grace period allows vehicles with a zero, one, or two-star DVS rating to continue operating in Greater London while they await safety system upgrades. However, operators must demonstrate a commitment to compliance by providing proof of scheduled installation.
Applying for the Grace Period
The grace period is not automatically applied to vehicles. To benefit from the extension, you must follow these steps before the initial DVS PSS deadline of 28th October 2024 :
Check Your Vehicle’s Safety Permit Rating: If your vehicle holds a zero, one, or two-star DVS rating, it is eligible. Operators must have evidence of a future safety system installation booked after 28 October 2024 but before 4th May 2025.
Gather Proof of Purchase or Installations: Submit relevant documents like purchase orders or installation booking confirmations for safety equipment that aligns with DVS requirements.
Apply Online: Applications are made through the London Road User Charging system. Once logged in, you will need to submit details for each vehicle individually using the DVS Enquiry Form, ensuring all details are correct to avoid delays or penalties.
What Happens After the Grace Period?
After 4 May 2025, all HGVs operating in Greater London must have Progressive Safe Systems in place if they do not meet the DVS star rating.
Centrad’s comprehensive vehicle safety solutions include a wide range of options, from 360-degree cameras to advanced sensors, ensuring full compliance with DVS regulations.
By acting now, you can avoid disruptions to your fleet’s operations and contribute to a safer road environment for vulnerable road users.
